Valeriano Lanchas last appeared with WNO as Sacristan in Tosca (2011) and Dr. Bartolo in The Marriage of Figaro (2010). Born in Bogota, Columbia, he has won several international competitions, including the Pavarotti International Voice Competition in 1995, Operalia in 2001, Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation of New York in 2001, and the Toti Dal Monte in 2004. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia with Armen Boyajian, and at Placido Domingo's invitation he was among the first group of Domingo-Cafritz Young Artists. He made his debut as Fiorello in The Barber of Seville with the Opera of Colombia (Bogota, 1994), and his international debut in Tosca with Luciano Pavarotti (Philadelphia, 1996). He has appeared with the Opera Company of Philadelphia in Tosca and Die Zauberflote. With WNO, his credits include Un ballo in maschera, Idomeneo with Placido Domingo and Anna Netrebko, La cenerentola as Don Magnifico next to Sonia Ganassi and conducted by Riccardo Frizza, and Leporello in Don Giovanni.
