Prudence Mabhena

Prudence Mabhena, a dynamic vocalist, has the unique ability to communicate with audiences from all walks of life. A native of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Ms. Mabhena is the lead singer of the band Liyana and the subject of the critically acclaimed film Music by Prudence, which won the 2009 Academy Award for Best Documentary, Short Subject. She also composes music in a wide range of styles and on many topics. Ms. Mabhena, who has arthrogryposisa condition that deforms the joints, teaches music at King George VI School and Centre for Children with Physical Disabilities in Bulawayo, and also choreographs and teaches dance. Her voice has drawn comparisons to the great South African liberation singer, Miriam Makeba.
