About

Last at the Kennedy Center with a delightful holiday program in 2017, this men's vocal ensemble returns with its trademark musicality, “spontaneous grace,” and “expressive power” (The Washington Post). Working without a conductor, the members of Cantus rehearse and perform as chamber musicians, each contributing to the entirety of the artistic process. The centerpiece of this year’s program is the exciting D.C. premiere of a new composition from Grammy Award® winner Libby Larsen.

The program’s centerpiece is a five-movement work composed for Cantus by Libby Larsen which premiered in fall 2018. YOU is an introspective narrative on the struggles of humans and communities to find meaningful connection in our increasingly digital world. A Music Accord co-commission.

A Note from Joseph “Yossi” Kalichstein, Artistic Director of Fortas Chamber Music
Inspired by, among others, Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman, with original texts by several composers, the program you will hear is about “I,” “you,” and “together,” contemplating relationships, yearning, and love. (Wait a minute! Isn’t this what chamber music is all about?) The glowing voices of the eight men of Cantus are a perfect vehicle for Libby Larsen’s YOU.
