National Symphony Orchestra NSO Summer and Capital Concerts

These free concerts mark the first public performances of the orchestral portion of the 2019 Kennedy Center/National Symphony Orchestra's four-week festival of orchestral and chamber music for young people ages 15 to 20.

Conducted by the National Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Horn, Abel Pereira, the NSO Summer Music Institute Orchestra is composed of approximately 70 students from around the country and international locales. These young musicians come together for four weeks of rehearsals, lessons, and enrichment courses with NSO musicians. The program is designed to expose and prepare the students for a 21st Century orchestral career.

PROGRAMS

July 9 at 6 p.m., Millennium Stage
Students from the NSO Summer Music Institute compete to play a concerto with the NSO SMI Orchestra at their final concert in the Concert Hall as part of this evening's Millennium Stage performance.

July 15 at 6 p.m., Concert Hall
The NSO SMI Orchestra performs Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 in the Concert Hall. Come hear the students in their first concert of the Summer Music Institute.

July 28 at 6 p.m., Concert Hall
The NSO SMI Orchestra performs Brahms’s Symphony No. 1 in the Concert Hall. The winner of the SMI concerto finals competition held previously on the Millennium Stage on July 9 will perform with the orchestra. Hear the students in their final concert and the winner of the concerto competition.
