Words, Beats & Life

This session is dedicated to teaching children and their parents the fundamentals of hip-hops first dance. Breaking. This is great opportunity for parents to learn to dance with their children using a form of dance that was recently accepted into the summer Olympics as a competitive "sport". This workshop will include footwork, the six step and, top rocking. Most enjoyed by ages 0-5.

Arts on the Horizon
Stories on the Horizon: Animal Exploration: Grab your binoculars and come explore some of your favorite animals. In this 45-minute class, play and learn about jungle animals, farm animals, and even forest animals through stories, movement, music, and puppets! Most enjoyed by ages 9 months - 2 1/2.

New Beginnings Yoga
Join Angelyn Shapiro of New Beginnings Yoga for an energizing morning of movement and exploration! Kiddos and their grown-ups will move through an all-levels yoga practice designed to increase body awareness, coordination, and spacial relations using songs, rhymes, and games. Children will explore basic poses and simple breathing techniques through creative play. No prior experience is required. Most enjoyed by ages 0-5.

Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts
Cruising the Caribbean! Join Terlene Terry-Todd (Ms.T.), Wolf Trap Master Teaching Artist, on a trip to the sunny West Indies, a journey full of songs, dances, and stories. You and your family will take an imaginary voyage to the seashore and a Caribbean market place while exploring props and costumes which bring songs and dances from the Caribbean to life. CityDance POP! will be teaching a Creative Movement class for ages 3-5 at The Kennedy Center's Second Saturday event on March 9th! Get ready to explore balance, coordination and imagination through dance. Parents are welcome to join in on the fun! CityDance POP! offers dance classes where you can move, groove and just have fun! POP! offers more than 20 dance classes for all ages, starting at 2.5 years old and up. Classes offered include: Creative Movement, Ballet, Jazz/Modern, Hip-Hop, Break Dancing, Contemporary, Tap and more. POP! is the destination for high quality, fast-paced dancing fun and the dance studios conveniently located in Tenleytown DC.

¡Vamos a cantar y bailar todos juntos! Join Levine Music’s First Music program as they share selections from Cantemos y Bailemos, a series of early childhood music classes in Spanish for ages 0-5. The First Music program combines the best of early childhood music education practices with fun, dynamic, and creative programs to deliver engaging musical learning experiences for children and families. You and your child will sing, chant, bounce, dance and play simple instruments in a morning of music-making in Spanish! No prior knowledge of Spanish is necessary.  This workshop is best enjoyed by children under the age of 5.

Yoga is a great activity kids and adults can actively participate in together - their whole lives! Circle Yoga's Family Yoga is a playful class designed for kids ages 5 to 8 years to experience yoga with a parent or caregiver. The class will incorporate yoga poses for kids and adults to enjoy together, as well as yoga and mindfulness games and breathing and relaxation techniques. All will leave the class rejuvenated, calmly energized and full of joy.

Washington Ballet

Relish the joy of dance during this fun family dance class. Children will exercise creativity, imagination, rhythm and motion as they explore animals, characters and the physical storytelling through guided improvisation. They will also learn introductory ballet steps and the story of Swan Lake. Most enjoyed by ages 2-5.

You and Me Song Circle with Imagination Stage

You and your child are invited to move and groove with us in this fun, interactive experience with Imagination Stage! In this workshop, an Early Childhood Teaching Artist accompanied by a live percussionist guides you through a musical exploration of a classic children's book.  Together we will celebrate with our mightiest voices and dancing shoes as we bring the story to life through song, movement, and instrument play. You & Me Song Circle is part of My First Imagination Stage. The My First Imagination Stage theatre series offers intimate, interactive performances designed for the very young in the DC metropolitan area. Tickets are not required, but because this event involves physical activity, all participants must sign a waiver prior to participating. Participants may sign a waiver electronically using the link below or in person at the time of the workshop, but spaces are first come, first served, with priority granted to those who have signed a waiver in advance online. The signup/liability form for each session will be posted in this space approximately two weeks prior to each workshop date.

Please note that there is no free parking when attending free events at the Kennedy Center. Patrons have the option to go online to the Kennedy Center Pre-Paid Parking Portal to purchase date-specific pre-paid event parking at a rate of $20 (a $3 savings) for access to the Kennedy Center garage. Review ways to get to the Kennedy Center.

Who are these workshops intended for?
The Second Saturdays Series has been created to provide free workshops for adults and children (under 8) to try on an art form together. They are intentionally structured for active participation by both adults and children. Check each workshop (listed below) for a specific age range.

Is there a difference between the 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. workshops?
No, on any given Saturday during the Series, the content and instruction for both workshops are the same.

The link above is only for the next workshops on the schedule. When can I sign up for any of the workshops AFTER that?
We only post liability waivers for one Saturday at a time. The waivers for the next workshops will be available approximately two weeks prior to each workshop date.

Is there a waitlist once the workshops are full?
There will be a waitlist at the registration table on the morning of the event. You will be asked to fill out a liability waiver on site before participating at the check-in table.

If I signed up online, am I guaranteed a spot in the workshop?
If you have signed up online, please make sure to have checked in 15 minutes prior to the class beginning or your spot will be released. (Check in by 9:15 a.m. for the 9:30 a.m. workshop or 11:15 a.m. for the 11:30 a.m. workshop.)

Can I sign up for more than one workshop on a Saturday?
Yes, if you think you will want to participate in both workshops (keeping in mind the content and instruction will be exactly the same), you can sign up for more than one workshop on a Saturday.

What if I can't come any more? Can I cancel?
No need to cancel. If there is room the morning of, participation will be first come first served.

Is this really free?
Yes! Participation in the Second Saturdays Series is free and open to the public.

Will there be stroller parking?
Yes! We will have an identified space near the check-in table in the Grand Foyer for stroller parking.
