About

Written by D.C.-based, bestselling author Andrew Carroll and directed by John Benitz, If All the Sky Were Paper is a compelling drama about Carroll's travels around the world to find "the most extraordinary war letters ever written." Featuring actual correspondences by troops and their loved ones from Carroll's bestselling books War Letters and Behind the Lines, the play is a humorous, heartfelt, and powerful work that will stir and inspire audiences.

Produced by Victoria Morris/Lexikat Artists and presented in association with Chapman University, the play features onstage performances by Jason Hall (Academy Award–nominated writer of American Sniper), Michael Conner Humphreys (who portrayed young Forrest in Forrest Gump and later joined the U.S. Army), Scott Simon (award-winning host of NPR's Weekend Edition Saturday and bestselling author), and others to be announced. All net ticket proceeds will support the Kennedy Center Education Fund.

In 1998, Carroll launched a national, all-volunteer initiative that works to find and preserve wartime correspondence. Carroll has traveled to all 50 states and 40 countries, including Iraq and Afghanistan, to seek out what he calls "the world's great, undiscovered literature." He has collected more than 100,000 previously unpublished letters and emails from every conflict in U.S. history, and these correspondences are now archived at the Center for American War Letters at Chapman University.

There will be a post-performance discussion immediately following the show on Thursday, May 21 and Friday, May 22. Audience members will have the opportunity to discuss the play with author Andrew Carroll, director John Benitz, and cast members.

Book Signing: Following the post-performance discussion on Thursday, author Andrew Carroll will be signing books (available from Theater Concessions) in front of the Terrace Theater.

Carroll has said, "We especially hope that active duty troops, veterans, and their families will come to the play, as we would welcome their feedback in particular. And everyone is encouraged to bring war letters. The search continues…."

Performance Timing: 90 minutes, with NO intermission.
