Jupiter & Okwess
1/12/2018
Jupiter Bokondji was born in Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and spent a large part of his childhood living in East Berlin, where he was exposed to American soul such as James Brown, The Jackson 5, The Temptations, and Kool and the Gang. He was inspired by the connection between Congolese rumba traditions and western music, and decided to create his own mode of musical expression. The music of Jupiter & Okwess transcends the Congo’s unexplored musical heritage, allowing audiences to become immersed in a pool of modernity, enriched by contributions from Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz, violinist Warren Ellis of Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds, and Robert del Naja, aka “3D,” of Massive Attack.
