Join us for a must-see performance as the Emerson String Quartet returns to the Terrace Theater for the final time—the penultimate performance before the esteemed quartet disbands. After more than four decades as one of the world’s premier chamber music ensembles, the quartet will share its farewell season in 2023. Named after the members’ admiration for American poet and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson, the group made its mark through a commitment to teaching, dozens of acclaimed recordings, several notable awards, and its efforts to keep string quartets relevant by commissioning modern composers. “With musicians like this,” wrote a reviewer for The Times (London), “there must be some hope for humanity.”
A NOTE FROM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR JENNIFER KOH
We’re so excited to bring you the Emerson String Quartet, the preeminent American string quartet for decades, in its farewell season. How special it is for them to be performing Bartók—their first recording of his string quartets was considered groundbreaking for an American ensemble! Plus, their program is bookended by two great composers’ takes on fugues, promising an exciting penultimate performance.
