    A two-time Michigan Emmy Award winner, a 2017 Sphinx Medal of Excellence recipient, and a 2015 GRAMMY® Award nominee, Eugene Rogers is recognized as a leading conductor and pedagogue throughout the United States and abroad. In addition to being the founding director of EXIGENCE, Dr. Rogers is the director of choirs and an associate professor of conducting at the University of Michigan. Recently, he was named as the fifth Artistic Director of the two-time GRAMMY® Award-Winning Ensemble, The Washington Chorus (Washington, D.C.).

    Karen Slack

    Hailed for possessing a voice of extraordinary beauty, a seamless legato and great dramatic depth, American soprano Karen Slack has appeared with the Metropolitan Opera where she made her debut in the title role of Verdi’s Luisa Miller, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Washington National Opera, and San Francisco Opera. In recent seasons, she has appeared as Alice Ford in Falstaff, Leonora in Il Trovatore and Tosca with Arizona Opera, as Aïda at Austin Opera, Emelda Griffith in Champion with New Orleans Opera, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni with Nashville Opera, Violetta in La Traviata with Sacramento Opera and Sister Rose in Dead Man Walking with both Minnesota Opera and Vancouver Opera and her Scottish Opera debut as Anna in Puccini’s Le villi. Additionally, Ms. Slack portrayed a featured role as the Opera Diva in Tyler Perry’s movie and soundtrack “For Colored Girls.”

    Kerry Wilkerson

    A resonant singer with unique evenness in register, baritone Kerry Wilkerson has been described by the Washington Post as an ‘exuberant’ performer having the “amber tone of a lyric baritone with the imposing weight demanded by Handel’s low-lying writing.” He made his Carnegie Hall debut in June 2017 to rave reviews as baritone soloist in the Vaughan Williams Sancta Civitas. His solo concert career has taken him up and down the east coast performing renowned oratorios and recitals. He was an esteemed member of the United States Army Chorus; singing and conducting for world leaders, Supreme Court Justices, politicians and dignitaries of many nations during official ceremony and protocol events.

    In past seasons, Mr. Wilkerson performed as baritone soloist in Opera Roanoke’s gala concert as well as in recital with Danielle Talamantes; Handel’s Messiah with National Symphony Orchestra, United Methodist Church, and La Jolla Symphony; Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs with American University; Rachmaninoff’s The Bells with Spokane Symphony; Kodály’s Te Deum with Oregon Music Festival; Bach’s Mass in B minor with The City Choir of Washington; Faure’s Requiem with Eugene Concert Choir; Mendelssohn’s Elijah with Choralis; Duruflé’s Requiem and Mozart’s Requiem for The Washington Chorus; as well as Einhorn’s Voices of Light with the National Philharmonic.

    Upcoming engagements include “Literary Giants” in recital with St. John’s Episcopal Church, Benoit/Alcindoro in La boheme with the Jacksonville Symphony, Henry Dehlinger’s Kohelet for the Santa Clara Chorale, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis for the National Philharmonic, and Raph Vaughn Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem for the Washington Chorus.

    In addition, Kerry has sung professionally with the United States Air Force Singing Sergeants and the critically acclaimed Robert Shaw Festival Singers in many of the most prestigious concert halls throughout the United States and Canada. Kerry is well known to Washington, DC audiences through his solo recitals and regular guest appearances with choruses and orchestras such as the Handel Choir of Baltimore, the National Philharmonic Chorale and Orchestra, City Choir of Washington, Choralis, and the Oratorio Society of Virginia. Recent performances as a featured soloist include Dvorak’s Stabat Mater with the North Carolina Master Chorale and Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem with the Air Force Symphony Orchestra at the acclaimed Kennedy Center.

    Damien Geter

    Damien Geter infuses classical music with various styles from the black diaspora to create music that furthers the cause for social justice.

    Damien’s growing body of work includes chamber, vocal, and orchestral works. Some recent commissions include: Cantata for a Hopeful Tomorrow for The Washington Chorus, Invisible for Opera Theater Oregon, The Justice Symphony for the University of Michigan, and String Quartet No. 1, Neo-Soul for All Classical Portland and On-Site Opera. His large work, An African American Requiem, will premiere in Spring 2022 in partnership with Resonance Ensemble and the Oregon Symphony.

    The book he co-authored, Music in Context: An Examination of Western European Music Through a Sociopolitical Lens is available on Amazon, or directly from the publisher, Kendall Hunt.

    Damien currently serves as the Artistic Advisor for Resonance Ensemble and Portland Opera. He is the owner of DG Music, Sans Fear Publishing.

    Roshanne Etezady

    Roshanne Etezady’s music has been described in Fanfare magazine as “fresh, effusive, and immediately likeable,” and she has been hailed by the Detroit Free Press as “a promising and confident composer.” Her music combines lyricism with rhythmic intensity and engages performers and audiences alike.

    Etezady’s works have been commissioned by the Detroit Symphony, Albany Symphony, Eighth Blackbird, Music at the Anthology, and the PRISM Saxophone Quartet. She has been a fellow at the Aspen Music Festival, the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and at the Atlantic Center for the Arts. Performers and ensembles including New Music Detroit, the American Composers’ Orchestra, Rêlache, Ensemble De Ereprijs, and the Dogs of Desire have performed Etezady’s music throughout the world. Her music has earned recognition from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Korean Society of 21st Century Music, the Jacob K. Javits Foundation, Meet the Composer, and ASCAP. Her music appears on the Naxos, innova, Cedille, Blue Griffin, Equilibrium, Summit, and Albany labels.

    Roshanne Etezady is a member of the composition faculty at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

    Jonathan King

    Celebrated as a “fresh presence,” and “fully alive” (Washington Post), Interim Assistant Condcutor Jonathan King is an artist “whose attention to textural detail and rhythmic precision leave nothing to be desired” (ArtsFuse). He is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Maryland School of Music, where he has directed the University Chorale and serves as Assistant Conductor, Chorus Master, and Junior Lecturer with Maryland Opera Studio. King previously served as assistant conductor with Grammy® Award-winning ensemble University Musical Society Choral Union and has prepared choirs to work with eminent conductors including Leonard Slatkin (Detroit Symphony Orchestra), Marin Alsop (Baltimore Symphony Orchestra), and Gianandrea Noseda (National Symphony Orchestra). He has also worked closely with American conductor John Nelson, assisting in several performances with the Chicago Bach Project, Orchestre de chambre de Paris, and the MasterWorks Festival in Winona Lake, Indiana. In 2022, King will assist Nelson in a monumental recording project of Handel’s Messiah at Westminster Abbey in London.

    Robert Meese

    Emerging conductor Robert Meese is committed to a career in which he brings the transformative power of music to as many people as possible. A recent graduate of the University of Michigan, Robert has learned from some of today’s leading conductors at festivals and masterclasses including the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music with Christian Măcelaru; the Eastern Music Festival with Gerard Schwarz, Jose-Luis Novo, and Grant Cooper; and the Medomak Conductor’s Retreat with Kenneth Kiesler. He’s worked previously as the Assistant Music Director of the Michigan Pops Orchestra, Assistant Conductor of the University Symphony Orchestra, and Assistant Conductor and Manager of the Campus Symphony Orchestra. At the composer’s request, he conducted the reading session of Michael Daugherty’s Blue Electra in advance of the premiere performance by Anne Akiko Meyers, Gianandrea Noseda, and the National Symphony Orchestra. Robert is looking forward to engagements with The Washington Chorus, the Dearborn Symphony Orchestra, and the Ann Arbor performance of EDEN with Joyce DiDonato, Maxime Emilyanchev, and il Pomo d’Oro.

    Previously, Robert graduated from Duke University with Highest Distinction, having earned the Julia Wilkinson Mueller Prize for Excellence in Music and the Duke Symphony Orchestra Conductor’s Award. Robert studied conducting with Verena Mösenbichler-Bryant and led the Duke Chamber Players for four years as Artistic Director, and the Duke Waltz Orchestra as Principal Conductor. His artistic study was supported by the Music Department, the Undergraduate Research Support Office, and four times by the Benenson Award in the Arts.

    The Washington Chorus (TWC), now in its 62nd season, is one of the foremost symphonic choruses in the nation. Noted for the superb artistry of its performances and recordings of the entire range of the choral repertoire, TWC is widely recognized as a cultural leader in the nation’s capital.

    A three-time nominated and two-time Grammy Award®–winner, the 160-voice Washington Chorus presents an annual series at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, regularly performs at the invitation of the National Symphony Orchestra, and appears annually at the Music Center at Strathmore in Maryland. TWC has appeared at the invitation of leading orchestras including the National and Baltimore Symphony Orchestras. TWC is proud to have sung with the NSO in more than 300 performances, under the direction of many of the world’s greatest conductors, including Gianandrea Noseda, Christoph Eschenbach, Leonard Slatkin, Mstislav Rostropovich, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Seiji Ozawa, Sir Neville Marriner, Kent Nagano, Marin Alsop, Gustavo Dudamel, Sir Andrew Davis, and many others.

    TWC has sung for numerous prestigious events throughout its history—inaugurations, papal visits, with the Rolling Stones during their 50th anniversary tour, and at the White House in 2013 and 2014 for the President and First Lady.
