Lyrics
Of the Father’s Love Begotten
Traditional, Arr. J. David Moore
Of the Father’s love begotten, ere the worlds began to be, He is Alpha and Omega, He, the source, the ending he. Of the things that are, that have been, and the future years shall see, evermore and evermore.
By his word was all created; he commanded; it was done; Heav’n and earth and depths of ocean, universe of three in one, all that sees the moon’s soft shining, all that breathes beneath the sun, evermore and evermore.
O, that birth forever blessed, when the Virgin, full of grace, by the Holy Ghost conceiving, bore the Savior of our race, and the babe, the world’s redeemer, first revealed his sacred face, evermore and evermore.
Adore Him! His praises sing! Bow before our God and King. Let no tongue on earth be silent, ev’ry voice in concert ring, evermore and evermore.
Christ, to thee, with God and Father and Holy Ghost, to thee, hymn and chant and high thanksgiving and unending praises be. Honor, glory, and dominion and eternal victory evermore and evermore.
Good King Wenceslas
Traditional, Arr. David Willcocks and Alain Trudel
Good King Wenceslas look’d out On the feast of Stephen, When the snow lay round about, Deep, and crisp, and even: Brightly shown the moon that night, Though the frost was cruel, When a poor man came in sight, Gath’ring winter fuel. Hither, page, and stand by me, If thou know’st it, telling, Yonder peasant, who is he? Where and what his dwelling? Sire, he lives a good league hence, Underneath the mountain, Right against the forest fence, By Saint Agnes’ fountain.
Bring me flesh, and bring me wine, Bring me pine-logs hither: Thou and I will see him dine, When we bear them thither. Page and monarch, forth they went, Forth they went together: Through the rude wind’s wild lament And the bitter weather.
Sire, the night is darker now, And the wind blows stronger; Fails my heart, I know not how; I can go no longer. Mark my foot-steps, good my page; Tread thou in them boldly: Thou shalt find the winter’s rage Freeze thy blood less coldly.
In his master’s steps he trod, Where the snow lay dinted; Heat was in the very sod Which the saint had printed. Therefore, Christian men, be sure, Wealth or rank possessing, Ye who now will bless the poor, Shall yourselves find blessing.
Trilogy for Christmas
Jerry Brubaker
The first Nowell, the angel did say, Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; in fields where they lay keeping their sheep On a cold winter’s night that was so deep. Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel.
They looked up and saw a star Shining in the east beyond them far; And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night.
Good Christian friends, rejoice, With heart, and soul, and voice; Give ye heed to what we say: News! News! Jesus Christ was born today: Ox and ass before Him bow, and He is in the manger now. Christ is born today!
Good Christian friends, rejoice, With heart, and soul, and voice; Now ye hear of endless bliss: Joy! Joy! Jesus Christ was born for this! He hath ope’d the heav’nly door, And we are blest for evermore. Christ was born for this!
Joy to the world! the Lord is come: Let earth receive her King; Let ev’ry heart prepare Him room, And heav’n and nature sing, And heav’n and nature sing, And heav’n and heav’n and nature sing.
He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness, And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love, And wonder and wonders of His love.
In the Bleak Mid-Winter
Becky McGlade, Words by Christina Rossetti
In the bleak midwinter Frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, Water like a stone, Snow had fallen snow on snow, Snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter Long ago.
Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him, Nor earth sustain; Heaven and earth shall flee away When He comes to reign: In the bleak midwinter A stable-place sufficed The Lord God Almighty Jesus Christ.
What can I give Him, Poor as I am? If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb, If I were a wise man I would do my part, – Yet what I can I give Him, Give my heart.
O Come, All Ye Faithful
J. F. Wade, Arr. David Willcocks
O come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; Come and behold him, Born the King of Angels: O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!
God of God, Light of Light, Lo! He abhors not the Virgin's womb; Very God, Begotten, not created: O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!
Sing, choirs of angels, Sing in exultation, Sing, all ye citizens of heav’n above; Glory to God in the highest: O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!
Yea, Lord, we greet thee, Born this happy morning, Jesu, to thee be glory giv’n; Word of the Father, Now in flesh appearing: O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!
Resonet in Laudibus
Traditional, arr. C.L. Alwes
Resonet in laudibus, Sion cum fidelibus, apparuit quem genuit Maria, Sunt impleta quae praedixit Gabriel. Eia! Eya! Virgo Deum genuit, quod divina voluit clementia. Hodie apparuit in Israel, ex Maria Virgine estnatus Rex. Resonet in laudbus, Resonet!
Translation:
All the world with praises rings, Zion with the faithful sings: The Christ is here, the son so dear of Mary, Is has happened, what was told by Gabriel. Hurray! hurray! To a virgin God came near, Willing she would to us sheer mercy. So today the Christ is here in Israel, From the Virgin Mary now is born the King. All the world with praises rings! Rings!
Flourishes
Carlyle Sharpe
Instrumental
Room
Lois Cecsarini, Arr. J. David Moore
You came and sat beside me as carols filled the air and the hall was bright with cheer And you told me of your story, the tale of your troubled years.
And I wondered as I watched you clutching your bag and holding it tight, Yes, I wondered as I watched you disappear into the night!
Would you find a room in a stable? Is there a place where they know your name? Will you find hearth fire and laughter, colored lights ‘round a window pane? Will there be space at the table, and kindness to share? And if the Manger Child should come now, would he find you there?
And I wondered as we parted and I looked into your eyes, if I should see you again, would I stop for a friend, or would I simply pass you by?
Will there be room in my stable where the wand’rer might stay the night, and where the lonely find welcome midst the gifts and glist’ning lights? Will there be space at my table for the ones we’d keep apart? And if the Manger Child should come now, would he find Christmas in our hearts?
Hodie, Christus Natus Est
Healey Willan
Hodie Christus natus est hodie Salvator apparuit hodie in terra canunt Angeli, laetantur Archangeli hodie exsultant justi, dicentes Gloria in excelsis Deo, alleluia!
Translation:
Today is Christ born: today the Savior has appeared; today the Angels sing, the Archangels rejoice; today the righteous rejoice, saying: Glory to God in the highest. Alleluia!
Sing My Child
Sarah Quartel
Sing for the promise in each new morning. Sing for the hope in a new day dawning. All around is beauty bright! Wake in the morning and sing, my child.
Dance in the joy of the day unfolding. Dance as you work and dance as you’re learning. All around is beauty bright! Take in the day and dance, my child.
But when troubles come and worry is all that can be found, gather your strength and hear your voice. Sing my child. Dance, my child. Laugh, my child. Peace, my child.
Laugh in the cool and the fresh of the ev’ning. Laugh in your triumph laugh in succeeding. All around is beauty bright! Rest in the ev’ning and laugh, my child.
Peace in the stillness and darkness of the night. Peace in the dreams of your silent delights. All around is beauty bright! Sleep in the night and peace, my child.
The Sounds of Christmas
arr. Rod Vester
Instrumental
This Christmas
Donny Hathaway and Nadine McKinnor, arr. Roger Emerson
Hang all the mistletoe. I’m gonna get to know you better this Christmas. And as we trim the tree, how much fun it’s gonna be together this Christmas.
The fireside is blazing bright. We’re carolin’ through the night and this Christmas will be a very special Christmas for me.
Presents and cards are here. My world is filled with cheer and you, this Christmas. And as I look around your eyes outshine the town; they do, this Christmas.
Shake your hand, shake your hand now. Wish your brother Merry Christmas all over the land now!
The Dream Isaiah Saw
Glenn L. Rudolph
Lions and oxen will sleep in the hay, leopards will join with the lambs as they play, wolves will be pastured with cows in the glade, blood will not darken the earth that God made.
Little child whose bed is straw, take new lodgings in my heart. Bring the dream Isaiah saw: life redeemed from fang and claw.
Peace will pervade more than forest and field: God will transfigure the Violence concealed deep in the heart and in systems of gain, ripe for the judgment the Lord will ordain.
Little child whose bed is straw, take new lodgings in my heart. Bring the dream Isaiah saw: justice purifying law.
Nature reordered to match God’s intent, nations obeying the call to repent, all of creation completely restored, filled with the knowledge and love of the Lord.
Little child whose bed is straw, take new lodgings in my heart. Bring the dream Isaiah saw: Knowledge, wisdom, worship, awe.
Silent Night
Franz Gruber
Silent night, holy night, All is calm, all is bright, Round yon virgin Mother and Child! Holy infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace. Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, holy night, Shepherds quake at the sight, Glories stream from heaven afar, Heav’nly hosts sing Alleluia; Christ the Savior is born! Christ the Savior is born!
Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love's pure light, Radiant beams from thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
Silent night, holy night, Wondrous start, lend thy light; With the angels let us sing, Alleluia to our King; Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born.
We Wish You a Merry Christmas
Paul Johnson, Arr. J. David Moore
We wish you a merry Christmas We wish you a merry Christmas We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
Good tidings we bring to you and your kin; Good tidings for Christmas and a happy New Year.
Good fortune to all in need of good cheer, Good tidings for Christmas and a happy New Year.
