A message from CEO/Artistic Director, Christopher Hampson:

It is thrilling to bring Scottish Ballet on tour internationally for the first time since early 2020 and that we can present the U.S. East Coast premiere of The Crucible, created for Scottish Ballet, is especially exciting. 

Helen Pickett’s brave full-length ballet received its World Premiere at the 2019 Edinburgh International Festival and instantly captivated audiences across the United Kingdom, casting its compelling spell with its precise psychological portraiture and theatrical power. It is perhaps a little bold for a Scottish ballet company to adapt—and present to U.S. audiences—one of the greatest and best-known classics of American drama, but the humanity and themes of The Crucible are universal and eternally relevant. An outside perspective can reveal surprising new layers in a familiar work.

This timely story, based on Arthur Miller’s play, is charged and unrelenting. Yet, the 1600s Salem community presents humanity and with that, light. There is a constant tension between the dark and light watch how these tensions begin to tear through the community.

Pickett’s powerful choreography is danced to a haunting score by composer Peter Salem, against technically demanding, dramatic production design of Emma Kingsbury and David Finn.

Program Notes

Fear: It’s Dark in the Woods

A small tight-knit and devout community, gripped by a hysteria that the devil was living in their midst. Lyn Gardner shines a light on Scottish Ballet’s The Crucible.

A man and a young woman circle each other, their mutual attraction obvious. A button on a bodice is popped, a shirt removed as if they are shedding layers of skin. Their contact is electric, but as body folds into body they fail to notice the dark looming shadows that tower over them.

Lyn Gardner is a freelance theater critic, writer, and journalist.

Christopher Hampson trained at The Royal Ballet School and danced with English National Ballet (ENB). Hampson has created many award-winning productions including, for ENB; Double Concerto, The Nutcracker, Perpetuum Mobile; for Ballet Black; Sextet, Storyville; for the Royal New Zealand Ballet, Romeo & Juliet, Cinderella; for Czech National Ballet, Giselle; for Atlanta Ballet; The Rite of Spring, Sinfonietta Giocosa; for Scottish Ballet; Hansel & Gretel, The Snow Queen, and credited with directing and co-creating Peter Darrell’s production of The Nutcracker and Gene Kelly’s love letter to ballet, Starstruck.

Arthur Miller, Playwright

Arthur Miller was born in New York City and studied at the University of Michigan. His plays include All My Sons, Death of a Salesman, The Crucible, A View From the Bridge, After the Fall, Incident at Vichy, The American Clock, Broken Glass, Mr. Peters’ Connections, and Resurrection Blues. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1949. Other works include the novel Focus, the screenplay The Misfits, the memoir Timebends, and texts for the books In Russia, In the Country and Chinese Encounters, in collaboration with his wife, photographer Inge Morath. Published collections include Collected Plays, Collected Essays, and Presence: Collected Stories.

Helen Pickett, Choreographer

Choreographer, Helen Pickett, native of San Diego, CA, has created over 60 ballets, for stage and film, in the U.S., U.K., Europe, and Australia.

The Crucible, her full length for Scottish Ballet, will tour to the Kennedy Center, Spoleto Festival USA, and Nashville in 2023. The Crucible premiered at Edinburgh International Festival in 2019, and won two awards, UK Theatre Critics Award and the Herald Angel Award. For its London premiere in 2022 the Financial Times wrote, “Casts a powerful spell…this Crucible belongs in the international repertoire.”

Peter Salem, Composer

Apart from writing soundtracks for TV dramas such as the hugely popular BBC series Call the Midwife, Salem is increasingly creating works for contemporary ballet. His first full-length ballet score was for Scottish Ballet’s A Streetcar Named Desire followed by scores for Camino Real (Atlanta Ballet) and Scottish Ballet’s The Crucible (both choreographed by Helen Pickett), Broken Wings (ENB), Frida (DNB), The Little Prince (BalletX), and Doña Perón (Ballet Hispanico). 

James Bonas, Artistic Collaborator

James Bonas is a traditional storyteller for the modern era. He combines imagination and intellect with a curiosity for technology and new forms, whether directing classical or contemporary theater, opera, or dance. 

Bonas trained as an actor at Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before developing a career as a director with interests ranging from classical theater and contemporary opera to innovation in the use of video design and animation.

Emma Kingsbury, Set and Costume Designer

Emma Kingsbury trained at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney, Australia. She has designed extensively for film, ballet, television, theater, and opera.

Most recently, Kingsbury costume designed Blacklight starring Liam Neeson and directed by Mark Williams (Ozark). In the Summer of 2021, Kingsbury designed for HBO the unscripted TV Series, Finding Magic Mike premiered in December on HBO Max.  In 2020, she costume designed the Arthouse dance film Wooden Dimes for the San Francisco Ballet, choreographed and directed by Dani Rowe.

David Finn, Set and Lighting Designer

David Finn began his career in 1978 as lighting designer for the master puppeteer Burr Tillstrom and Kukla, Fran & Ollie. He was resident Lighting Designer for Mikhail Baryshnikov’s White Oak Dance Project for eight years. His designs for dance can be seen with the National Ballet of Canada, San Francisco Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, American Ballet Theater, Australian Ballet, Bayerisches StaatsBallett, Twyla Tharp & Dancers, and Paul Taylor Dance Company. He lit James Kudelka’s Le Baiser de la fée for Birmingham Royal Ballet. He has collaborated with John Macfarlane on various productions, including Falstaff (Florence), Othello (Brussels), Boris Godunov (Amsterdam), The Pirates of Penzance (Berlin), Sweet Violets (The Royal Ballet), Hummingbird (San Francisco), and Swan Lake, (Munich). He lit the stage scenes in Martin Scorcese’s film The Age of Innocence and directed a documentary, The Green Monster, which premiered on public television in the U.S. in 1999. Finn was the lighting designer for Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson ONE in Las Vegas and ZED in Tokyo. Future projects include world premieres of Frankenstein (The Royal Ballet) and The Little Prince (National Ballet of Canada).

Scott Bolman, Associate Lighting Designer

Scott Bolman is a lighting designer and educator working in a diverse array of performance mediums, including theater, dance, music, and opera.

His work has been seen in venues throughout the world including the Athens and Epidaurus Festival, Benaki Museum (Athens), Brooklyn Academy of Music, Guggenheim Museum NYC, German Republic Theater (Kazakhstan), Goodspeed Opera, Judson Church, Lincoln Center Festival, Melkweg (Amsterdam), Playmakers Repertory Company, Prototype Festival, Radialsystem V (Berlin), Segerstrom Concert Hall, Spreehalle (Berlin), Studio Theater, and Walt Disney Concert Hall. His work for dance includes designs for Shen Wei Dance Arts, Ate9 Dance Company, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, David Dorfman, KTDance, Parijat Desai Dance Company, Atlas Dance, and Aiko Kinoshita.

Oliver Rydout, Director of Dance & Artistic Development

Oliver Rydout trained at the Hammond School and The Royal Ballet School. Upon graduation he joined Scottish Ballet and danced many soloist and leading roles. After six years with the company, he took a leave of absence to dance with the Asami Maki Ballet and New National Ballet, Tokyo, performing leading roles in much of the classical repertoire. After four years in Japan, Rydout re-joined Scottish Ballet and danced leading roles in ballets by Balanchine, Van Manen, Ashton, MacMillan, and Forsthye.

Sandrine Cassini, Rehearsal Director

Born in Nice, France, Sandrine Cassini studied at the Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris and was awarded the Prix de Lausanne before joining the Paris Opera Ballet where she danced in Nureyev’s La Bayadère. As a first soloist, she danced with Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, Zurich Ballet, Ballet BC, Mannheim National Theatre, Alberta Ballet, and Béjart Ballet Lausanne.

Tamarin Stott, Rehearsal Assistant/P-Med Lead

Tamarin Stott trained in Devon with Rosemary Gillet, and the associate programs of The Royal Ballet School and Central School of Ballet. Stott was a First Artist with English National Ballet, and later worked with Russell Maliphant in Second Breath (Principal role) at the Barbican, and Akram Kahn’s Dust on The Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury.

She has performed with City Ballet of London, Birmingham Royal Ballet, and K-Ballet. Stott's choreography has been performed at The Place, Print Room, and Queen Elizabeth Hall. She was commissioned for a short film by Channel 4 which was nominated for an award at the Cinedans film festival.

James Barton, Rehearsal Assistant/Artistic Lead

James Barton danced with Birmingham Royal Ballet, performing soloist and principal roles in the majority of the company’s repertoire. He was an original cast member of An American in Paris in the West End and has taught at many of the country’s leading vocational schools. He joined Scottish Ballet in November 2019 and has since staged works by Christopher Hampson, David Dawson, Helen Pickett, Gene Kelly, Peter Darrell, and Sir Kenneth Macmillan. He assisted Jess & Morgs on their feature film The Secret Theatre and on their new production of Coppélia for the Edinburgh International Festival.
