In commemoration of World Water Day (March 22), the Kennedy Center, located on the banks of the Potomac, will display Nordic Swan, a 2015 work by Danish artist Thomas Dambo. Presented in collaboration with the Embassy of Denmark, whose national bird is the swan, Nordic Swan will be on display by the REACH reflecting pool through April 18. Known for crafting large artworks out of waste material, Dambo’s sculptures show the potential in material that is often discarded, becoming a threat to the natural world. Nordic Swan is constructed from more than 300 recycled plastic buckets.

Nordic Swan is supported by Embassy of Denmark in Washington D.C., the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, and the Ministry of Culture of Denmark.

Nordic Swan

"Some time ago I came across a big pile of white plastic buckets in a container. It turned out that cantinas at schools, big businesses, etc. get a lot of plastic buckets containing yogurt, eggs, mayonnaise, and other foods. After having a cantina collecting buckets for me over a period of three months, I had around 300 and made this Swan. The nice thing about the buckets is that they are approved for human food so the plastic is of highest quality and can be used for many great purposes. I'm thinking they would be great as roof tiles for a shed or to create a dome of some kind, but this must be next time."

The Stories That Fabric Tells

“I firmly believe that Creating art and Folk Art which I call the people’s art by ordinary people has the capacity to affect the spirit. Really feel it is spirit driven.” –Carolyn Mazloomi, Quilting Community Advocate
