Transhumance takes a surreal journey across the landscape of gender, as NYC–based clown Ania Upstill playfully explores what it means to be a trans human, or simply human, within a society that wants to constrain us with binary concepts. Through the metaphor of a journey that stops at differently gendered stations, Upstill’s non-speaking clown explores and rejects the constraints of being female or male and ultimately finds a gender identity and expression all their own. As a trans and queer performer, Ania delivers a heartfelt and physical journey through and around gender norms, full of joy and buoyancy. In a time when the conversations around gender are so tender and often heated, Ania’s clowning brings some much-needed beauty and humor to the subject.
Winner of a Best Weekly Award for Circus and Physical Theatre at Adelaide Fringe in 2020, and four-star reviews at Edinburgh Fringe 2022. Reviewers say, “It is a work of joy and playfulness – whimsical, witty and replete with wonder” (TheatreView.org.nz); “Manages to be both a deeply personal story of self-identification and a universal experience of gender paradigms” (TheatreScenes.co.nz); “Clever, funny and specific! [A] new talent who can captivate the room and leave you wanting more!” 10/10 (Upstage Downstage Podcast); and “A witty approach to a topical issue makes Transhumance a ride worth taking” (TheaterReviewsFromMySeat).
